September 22, 2012 is Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running from late September to the first weekend in October.  More than six million guests from around the world are expected to descend on the beer tents of Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest through October 7. Over the course of the sixteen-day festival they will watch parades, participate in massive sing-a-longs, eat Bavarian foods like soft pretzels, wear traditional lederhosen, and consume more than 1 million gallons of beer.

This traditional German festival dates all the way back to 1810. In October of that year, the crown prince of Bavaria married the princess of Saxony-Hildburghausen, and all the citizens of Munich were invited to attend the royal wedding. The celebration turned into an annual autumn event.

To celebrate Oktoberfest in the Grand Strand, plan your very own autumn celebration. Grab your friends and family to go apple picking, sample some festive fall beers at many of our great bars, and enjoy all the sights and sounds of the season. Cheers! Or, as the Germans would say, “Prost!”

Calendar alert:  we in the Grand Strand are celebrating our Oktoberfest on September 28-30 at Market Common and  October 6 with two special events: Oceanfront Merchants Association and the Long Bay Symphony Oktoberfest of Fashion.
