“What is Topics Trivia?”

It’s a game that lets players show what they know.  A team consists of 1 to 6 players. Teams are asked questions from different topics, such as literature, geography, sports, television, history, movies, etc.  After a question is asked, the teams choose and submit an answer before the allotted time period ends. The correct answer scores points. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner and prize(s) will be awarded.  Enter your name once each month for the Grand Prize Drawing in December.   RSVP’s are appreciated, not required.  Join us and have some fun!

Red, White & Blue Sculpture in the Brookgreen Garden Collection: Robin Salmon
Nov 4 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

The Horry County Museum and The AVX Foundation present a lecture by Robin Salmon on Saturday, November 4th, on American veteran sculptors in the Brookgreen Gardens collection.

Many of the sculptors in the Brookgreen Gardens collection served in the military or in military support jobs during wartime and its aftermath. In observance of Veterans Day, this talk will detail those who served and what they did (including some decorated heroes), those who created our country’s important patriotic monuments, and some of the real “Monuments Men” who saved international art treasures during and after World War II.

A native South Carolinian, Robin Salmon has been on the staff of Brookgreen Gardens since 1975. She oversees the acquisition, exhibition, and conservation of Brookgreen’s art, history, library, and archives collections, and directs the activities of the Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Center for American Sculpture at Brookgreen Gardens.

Robin has degrees in history and art history from the University of South Carolina and is a graduate of the Museum Management Institute at the University of California-Berkeley. She is a Patron Member of the National Sculpture Society, serves on its board of directors, and on the editorial board of its magazine, Sculpture Review. In 2007, Robin received the Society’s Sculpture House Award given for outstanding service to American figurative sculpture. She also serves on the boards of the Georgetown County History Museum and the Georgetown County Women’s Hall of Fame. She served on the National Endowment for the Arts panel to select the artist to create a sculpture of Rosa Parks for Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol, and has been a nominee for the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award, South Carolina’s highest honor in the arts. She is nationally known for her knowledge of American art and outdoor sculpture conservation.

Robin is the author of Sculpture of Brookgreen Gardens (2009), Brookgreen Gardens (2006), and Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture, Volume II (1993), is a co-author of seven other books, and has written numerous essays and articles.  Her current major project is a biography and catalogue raisonné of the sculptor and art patron, Anna Hyatt Huntington.

The program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 843-915-5320 or email [email protected]. To view a full list of programs, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.
