5th Annual New Voices Playfest is This Weekend

Atlantic StageAnyone who likes theater, this is the weekend for you!  So what exactly is a “Playfest“?

The folks at Atlantic Stage spend all year accepting plays submitted by playwrights all around the Southeast.  These are read by a committee of theatre folk.   The very best are selected to be read aloud by their actors so that these brand new works can be heard.  A reading means that the actors have rehearsed with a director a time or two to read and discuss the play.  During the performances, actors generally sit onstage and read from the script with full vocal performance but limited movement.  Afterwards, the panel of professional respondents and audience are asked to give feedback on the piece which is then given to the playwright, who is sometimes in attendance.  They will take this feedback and further refine their work, ultimately working their way toward full performances and publication of the work.

This is the exciting part…the tickets are free!   Anyone can get a ticket online or you can get one at the door.  Just show up. You do not have to stay for all four,  you can come to one play, two plays…as many you like!  Just please make your entrances and exits between the readings and not in the middle of them.

And here is the best part: As long as you come to see one of the readings you are invited to the reception? Sounds like a fun thing to do in Myrtle Beach this weekend!

Atlantic Stage’s is committed to the development of New Works as part of their mission statement: “The purpose of Atlantic Stage is to enhance the cultural landscape of the Myrtle Beach area by providing quality theatrical productions of classical, contemporary and new works that are entertaining and enlightening.
